Boys Program

At The Philadelphia Dance Academy, we believe that ballet is for boys too. We are proud to announce that our Boys’ Ballet Scholarship Program is expanding next year. In September of 2011, PDA began a boys-only class for ages 8 and older, and next school year will bring the addition of a second. The Academy’s eighth season, starting September 17, 2012, will offer a class for ages 6-10 and one for ages 11 and older.

To encourage boys to foster a love of dance, all boys enrolled in our Pre-Professional Division (Ballet I and higher) can take class on scholarship. PDA has offered this scholarship for 7 seasons. To date, we have 8 male students taking advantage of this program, and 5 other students preparing for Ballet I in introductory levels.

Students who are ages 8 and older and enrolled in 2 or more Pre-Professional Division ballet technique classes also have the opportunity to audition for The Philadelphia Youth Ballet, PDA’s youth company. Performance fees may apply.

Boy’s Program faculty includes Meredith Rainey, choreographer and former soloist with Pennsylvania Ballet. Rainey was on the original faculty at the successful Boys’ Scholarship Program at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.

Acceptance into the boys-only classes is by audition, but no prior dance training is required. Dress code is a plain white tee shirt, solid blue or black pants or shorts, and black or white ballet shoes. For students with financial need, shoes can be provided. The class is a year-long commitment. Students are allowed two absences per semester, and excessive absence will lead to dismissal from the program.
